From Epilepsy to Filmmaking

“A rough beginning doesn’t have to mean there is a rough end.”
 – Jon Jones

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog. My name is Brock Drury, in my first post I am going to tell you a little bit about myself. I am going to be blogging primarily about my experiences working on TV Shows and films. I will also blog about sports from time to time and the business of filmmaking. I want to tell you about my journey to how I got to where i am now and what my goals are moving forward.

Let’s start back when I was nine years old. A small town in south Georgia called Hoboken, GA is where I grew up. I was a normal kid who loved football, NASCAR, and video games. I was smart, had a good group of friends, and had good social skills. Then, I was diagnosed with epilepsy and everything changed. I had to be taken out of school, I couldn’t play video games anymore because they triggered my seizures.  The doctor put me on a medicine called Topomax. I was nine years old and taking 600 mg of Topomax a day which was a high dose for an adult. The side effects of the medicine made it harder for me to pay attention in class and hard for me to keep a conversation with people. My teachers described me as a zombie.

Finally, the doctors got my epilepsy under control after countless medication changes, MRIs, and EEGs. I still didn’t feel normal as a kid though because all of my fellow students treated me different. Throughout school I tried to hide the fact that I was an epileptic from anyone because I didn’t know how they would react, but once I got older I realized it didn’t matter. I had always felt like that since I had epilepsy, I was limited on what I could do, but after I graduated from high school I realized that there are other people with epilepsy who was achieving success and they got treated the same as everyone else. So I became less self concious about my epilepsy and became more confident in the things I was doing. By this time I was on a much lower dose of Topomax than when I was a kid, so even though it still affected my cognitive abilities I could function like a normal person.

I got into a local community college and eventually transferred to Valdosta State University where I majored in mass media. I made a few short films while I was there, made a lot of friends and good connections. I graduated in 2016 and it was time to find a job. I moved to Atlanta after graduating to find a job because that’s where all the jobs were. After seven months I still hadn’t found a job, so I moved back and was ready to give up on the entertainment industry. The week I moved back I went to an interview at Pizza Inn and got hired. When I got into my truck in the parking lot, I got a call about a video/editor position on a tv show I had applied to. They wanted to do schedule an interview. I took the interview and got hired. I  never had to start at Pizza Inn.

Now I am still at that same job and am the production manager. The show is an outdoor hunting show called Wayne Pearson’s Ultimate Outdoors. You can watch it on Pursuit Channel at 10 PM EST every Thursday. I film, edit, and communicate with sponsors and the network. If you are doubting yourself on getting into the entertainment industry, don’t. If I can do it, anyone can do it. I went from growing up with epilepsy to being the production manager on a tv show.  I didn’t do it by myself, I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of my family and friends. However, if I can do that then you can achieve your goals.  My path is unique and so is yours. Just keep moving forward and don’t give up.

I’m still moving forward on my path. My goal is to make a feature film within the next few years. In the short term I am producing a couple of short films and trying to grow Main Event Media. The next short film I am making is called Squatchin’. It’s a mockumentary about Bigfoot. I’ll be updating you guys along the way showing you behind the scenes content from filming.  So now you know who I am and my journey to get to where I am currently. Leave me a comment and let me know who you are and what your goals are for 2019. Happy New Years.
